Lybster Community Toilets

In October 2018, Highland Council took the difficult decision to close the public toilets in Lybster village as part of an efficiency and cost- cutting drive.
Public toilet provision was offered by local business The Portland Hotel who participated in the Highland Comfort Scheme but were only open seasonally.
After a significant number of complaints in the Highlands, made more prolific by the COVID-19 pandemic, LLCCDC undertook a public consultation and decided to source funding to refurbish and re-open the toilets.
Lease negotiations with Highland Council took place in Spring 2021 and work to bring the toilets up to a standard started that Summer. While it was mothballed, the building had suffered damage, had been broken into and vandalised and were generally in a poor state of repair.

After negotiations with energy and water suppliers along with extensive renovations, we were able to re-open the toilets in October 2021.

We are grateful to all funders who have contributed to the refurbishment, and for also funding the ongoing running and maintenance of the facility. As a member of Highland Council’s Highland Comfort Scheme, LLCCDC receives £200 per month towards running costs.
LLCCDC have also been able to create a part-time position to manage the toilets.
Use of the facilities are free of charge.
Renovations were funded by:
SSE Beatrice Fund, RWE Bad a Cheo Fund and North Highland Initiative.
Renovation contractors:
- Sandy Macgregor Ltd (plumbers and electricians)
- Willie Bain (painting services)
- Rookery Glass (uPVC window replacement)
- R Gordon (joinery)
- Monarch Locksmiths (door repairs)
- KJ Signs (signage)
